A gift card is a payment. A promo code is a price reduction. Shopify hands both to finance in the same discount field, so the two arrive in the ERP looking identical. Teams then spend month end unpicking payouts by hand to work out which orders were genuinely discounted and which were simply paid for with stored value. This template separates the two at the moment of checkout and posts each under the correct accounting treatment.
